Laparotomy

A laparotomy is a traditional “open” abdominal surgery which examine the inside of the abdomen and the internal organs for any abnormality. Very often, a laparotomy is performed to remove the uterus (hysterectomy), an ovary, fallopian tube, fibroids or as part of the surgical procedure for cancer.

The procedure is normally performed under a general anaesthetic. It may take one to several hours depending on the complexity of the operation. A laparotomy is a significant operation, and recovery will take time. Hospital stay for a few days after the surgery is required.
